Translation for humans
Around the year 2000, many websites were first designed as one big picture, then 'sliced' into pieces that were glued back together in a table. Here, the plumber's home page is cut into 36 slices, numbered in red marker on the cutting mat. Even the menus and the welcome text are images, 'so the font looks nice everywhere'. A search engine's crawler cannot read text drawn inside a picture: to it, the page contained no words at all, and it never knew what the company sold.
